SUMMARY:Protein Synthesis as Musical Structure – Thesis Concert
DESCRIPTION:AIR Lab presents Protein Synthesis as Musical Structure\, a thesis concert exploring how biology can shape live electronic music. The concert is centered on BioScape\, a design research artefact and biology audio workstation developed in the intersection of HCI\, artistic research\, musification\, and molecular biology. While earlier empirical work around the project has examined how biological actors may use music as a sensory and affective lens on their own field\, this concert turns the perspective around and explores the usefulness of biology as compositional logic for musicians. \nIn the performance\, biological structure is treated not as metaphor\, but as an organizing principle for live electronic music. Sequence-based relations shape rhythm\, harmonic movement\, and larger musical form\, producing patterns that remain coherent while resisting familiar periodic stability. The concert asks what it means to compose and perform through an external biological logic\, and how improvising musicians respond to a structure that is internally consistent yet unfamiliar in its temporal and harmonic behavior. \nThe performance features Thor Madsen (guitar)\, Malthe Beck (tenor saxophone)\, Steen Rock (electronics)\, and Tao Højgaard\, designer of BioScape. \nEVENT ORGANIZER\nTao Højgaard

SUMMARY:AIR Lab Listen Up! Session #5: The Emotional Life of a Painting
DESCRIPTION:In the fifth instalment of AIR Lab’s Listen Up! Sessions\, AIR Lab welcomes visual artist Julien Deiss and sound artist Tao Højgaard for an afternoon of deep listening\, artist talks\, and live performance. The session centres on inspiration\, creativity\, artistic method\, and the generative potential of collaboration across art forms. \nJulien Deiss reflects on artistic process from the perspective of painting\, focusing on intuition\, material engagement\, and the role of other art forms in the development of visual practice. Tao Højgaard continues from the perspective of sound\, considering how music can enter cross-aesthetic work not as accompaniment\, but as an active and structuring presence. Together\, their presentations open onto the question of what becomes possible when artistic media do not merely coexist\, but begin to transform one another through shared methods and technological integration. \nEVENT ORGANIZER\nAIR Lab \nDATE AND TIME\nFriday April 10th at 15:30 – 17:00

SUMMARY:AIR Lab Listen Up! Session #4: In This Room
DESCRIPTION:In the fourth instalment of AIR Lab’s Listen Up! Sessions\, composer\, producer\, and songwriter Hannah Schneider joins AIR Lab to share the artistic process behind her new album In This Room. \nWritten and recorded during a two-month residency at Thorvaldsens Museum in Copenhagen\, the album was shaped by a process in which the museum’s historical spaces became both context and catalyst for the music. Here\, composition and recording were approached as a spatial and intuitive practice\, asking what happens when acoustic instruments become the point of departure for contemporary electronic music. For AIR Lab\, this offers a rich artistic entry point into questions of affect\, embodiment\, atmosphere\, and relational listening: how spaces co-produce experience\, how sound mediates felt encounter\, and how creative practice can function as a mode of inquiry into human-technology-environment relations. \nEVENT ORGANIZER\nAIR Lab \nDATE AND TIME\nFriday March 27th at 15:30 – 17:00

SUMMARY:AIR Lab Listen Up! Session #3: The Avenue of Sound
DESCRIPTION:In the third instalment of AIR Lab’s Listen Up! Sessions\, sound artist\, electronic musician\, and producer Steen Lund Holbek presents The Avenue of Sound — an immersive installation composed specifically for the AIR Lab space. \nThe installation consists of two parallel sound walls — each 7 meters long and 2 meters high — built from 32 mismatched loudspeakers powered by 16 equally idiosyncratic hi-fi amplifiers. Positioned four meters apart\, the speaker walls form a corridor through which visitors are invited to walk\, linger\, and listen. \nEVENT ORGANIZER\nAIR Lab \nDATE AND TIME\nFriday December 5th 2025 at 15:00 – 18:00

SUMMARY:Listen Up! Session #2: The Periodic Table is a Beat
DESCRIPTION:In this second instalment of the AIR Lab Listen Up! Sessions\, Junior Researcher and KDDIT student Tao Højgaard invites you to an exclusive pre-premiere of The Periodic Table is a BEAT! – a live musification of the periodic table of the elements\, which will be performed at the Web Audio Conference 2025 at IRCAM in Paris next week. \nThe work translates the 118 elements into sound and rhythm through musification – a method that uses the phenomenology of music as a research instrument. Drawing on functional harmony\, rhythm theory and compositional structure\, musification employs the internal logic of music to illuminate and recontextualise patterns in other systems. Rather than sonifying data\, it transforms scientific order into a musical and affective experience\, inviting reflection on how knowledge can be felt as well as understood. \nEVENT ORGANIZER\nAIR Lab \nDATE AND TIME\nFriday\, November 14th 2025 at 15:30

SUMMARY:STELLA Camp 2024
DESCRIPTION:Last weekend\, as part of Ørestad Sound & Science-festival\, we proudly hosted this years STELLA Camp again. Over a span of two days\, 11 curious\, young participants took part in two workshops focusing on using modern technology to reinterpret the world surrounding us and create art. In the first\, the participants were encouraged by the host\, artist Katrine Villadsen\, to explore the area around ITU with a zoom recorder\, and capture the sounds they found interesting. They were then split into two groups\, each using the sounds they found to create a unique piece of sound  \nThe second workshop was hosted by AI-enthusiast and artist Andreas Refsgaard\, who gave the participants a chance to explore how modern AI-image generation technology can be used to create images of make-believe cityscapes – both utopian and dystopian.  \nIn the finale\, the lab was transformed into an exhibition-space\, and the parents of the participants were invited to experience the works we created over the weekend.  \nWe hope for STELLA to return to AIRLab for many years to come!

SUMMARY:Feminist Technoscience Film Club vol. 3
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to announce the third and final Feminist Technoscience Film Club of this semester! We will watch two episodes of the South Korean drama My Holo Love (2020) and warm up with the short film Alexandra (2019) directed by Anna Brynskov. Expect hologram\, AI\, and blockchain technologies on screen 👾 \nAlexandra takes place in a greener future where two students negotiate their electricity use with Alexandra – a blockchain system that manages with firm hand. A critical-feminist comment on algorithmic decision-making. \nMy Holo Love is about the woman So-yeon who by coincidence becomes the betatester of Holo – a hologram- and AI-based personal assistant. Friendly feelings emerge between So-yeon and Holo\, but competing developers are after the Holo prototype\, and Holo must use all of his machine intelligence to keep So-yeon and himself safe. The K-drama looks into Korea’s commercial tech start-up culture and wraps it in cute melodrama and far out imaginaries about AI. \nAfterwards\, we will form a circle with our chairs and have a collective discussion on bodily relations & machines\, future imaginaries about AI\, solutionism\, gender roles\, and impressions from the audience. 🛸💗 \nWHAT: Screening of My Holo Love + Alexandra\, followed by discussion\nWHERE: AIR Lab at IT University of Copenhagen\nWHEN: May 14\, 16:00-18:45 \nSend an e-mail to abry@itu.dk to sign up. 📽️

SUMMARY:Andreas Refsgaard: ML5 prototyping workshop
DESCRIPTION:Niche superstar Andreas Refsgaard\, a renowned creative coder and former design student here at ITU\, swung by AIRLab on Tuesday to host a workshop. In this session\, curious students explored the possibilities of using face- and body-tracking packages for P5.js. The workshop began with Andreas demonstrating some of his prototypes\, followed by participants spending two hours playing around with the technology\, getting help from Andreas and each other. It was both fun and insightful\, and we are eagerly awaiting the next event of this nature. Workshop took place here in AIRLab\, and was set up by the student organization DAK (Design Aktivitetskomité). \nWe used the web editor for P5.js\, which possibly resulted in a new all-time low entry barrier for a software prototyping workshop. \nHere’s an example of a participant-made sketch\, allowing the user to shoot a virtual laser out of their index finger: https://editor.p5js.org/jonasniel/sketches/aKNA6htUb \nSee examples of ML5-packages in use here: https://examples.ml5js.org/ \nLink to the facebook-event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1121140105874954 \n \n

SUMMARY:Wekinator workshop
DESCRIPTION:Post-workshop update!\nThe workshop went great\, and the attendees learned how easy it is to register an unique input\, and have it trigger something on another device. In this case\, motions with your phone -> Computer. \nThis allowed for unique use cases\, like using your phone as a wand to trigger different spells\, based on the specific movements. Other creative uses include spelling out letters in the air\, to trigger keystrokes on a computer. We recommend using the official wekinator examples\, to help get an overview of some well-documented I/O combiatnions. We think Wekinator is a great way to get some practical experience with how machine learning might help you prototype your ideas\, allowing you to focus on the expression of your work instead of just getting it to work. \nSee you next time\, in AIRLab \nhttp://www.wekinator.org/examples/ \n\nDescription\nWant to use machine learning in your projects? Then join us in AIR lab on March 20th 14.00 – 17.00! This workshop will focus on Wekinator\, easy-to-use software for interactive machine learning with no Coding. A great possibility to learn how machine learning can be used in your projects.\n \nAll ITU students are welcome!\nSign up here (not a demand!) \n  \nIn this workshop we will introduce you to the basics of supervised machine learning. Though using Wekinator you will be able to play with supervised machine learning combining wekinator with different input and outputs.  \n  \nSlides: https://www.figma.com/proto/OhcCjFMbPQ44ndYgHaYtNb/AIRLAB-workspace?page-id=2189%3A2&type=design&node-id=2959-92&viewport=-18%2C392%2C0.03&t=mjlGYjcHoAQALbJs-1&scaling=contain&starting-point-node-id=2959%3A92&mode=design

SUMMARY:Research workshop on somaesthetic design
DESCRIPTION:Participants on the workshop were a group of HCI researchers and was facilitated by researcher Katerina Stepanova\, visiting ITU from Simon Fraser University\, Canada\, and Assoc. Prof. Vasiliki Tsaknaki (ITU). \nAs part of their research on design with breathing for embodied connection\, the researchers conducted a somaesthetic design workshop prototyping with somadigital materials. They explored the qualities of experiences that emerge when the sense our own and other’s breathing is mediated though different materials. Part of the workshop focused on reflection on how we perceive and connect to human and more-than-human others by sharing the experience of breathing\, how this experience unfolds\, and what type of cues could support its unfolding. Katerina brought the VR demo Star Stuff (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/361590556_Star-Stuff_A_Shared_Immersive_Experience_in_Space)\, which participants and other faculty had the chance to experience in the lab. \nKaterina Stepanova is PhD Candidate at iSpace lab at the School of Interactive Art and Technology at Simon Fraser University\, Vancouver\, Canada. Through an embodied cognition\, phenomenology and soma-design her work explores how VR and bio-responsive technology can support intimate\, and sometimes transformative experiences of feeling connection to oneself\, others\, and the world.

SUMMARY:Stella Camp in AIRLab!
DESCRIPTION:On November 11th and 12th\, AIRLab was the center of Stella Camp\, where curious teens aged 13-17 took the chance to participate a variety of engaging workshops. Enchanting sounds of nature\, the magic of creative AI\, and the art of music all in one vibrant space! \nImagining green futures using Generative AI: Digital artist Andreas Refsgaard taught us the secrets of generative AI. Using image generation to imagine a future wherein humans and nature took better care of each other\, we learned how to harness the ever-growing power of generative AI – a tool that’s clearly both fun and powerful for playful minds of all ages. \nCreating Beats from Nature’s Symphony with Katrine Villadsen: Katrine Villadsen guided us on turning everyday sounds into our own musical beats. Taking a stroll around the university\, we captured the small yet wonderful sounds of nature\, resulting in a collaborative musical piece crafted together with the participants. \n \nCrafting Electromagnetic Microphones with Nicole Cecile Bitch: Nicole Cecile Bitch introduced us to the world of crafting electromagnetic microphones – nifty devices that transform invisible magnetic fields into audible wonders. It was like discovering a new way of hearing the world. The participants got to bring home their creations\, which they can plug into any device they want to \nThe grand finale: a plant concert led by artist Bo Thorning and our talented participants. Parents and curious onlookers got a front-row seat to witness a concert wherein the participants played on plants connected to capacative sensors. These were connected to a modular synth and electronic drums\, and ended up sounding better than anyone could have imagined! \nLooking back on this wonderful weekend\, we’re hope to be a part of future Stella Workshops! It’s always an honor to inspire the youth to explore technology in creative ways. \n

SUMMARY:CCC#5: FIGMA beyond the screen
DESCRIPTION:We’re happy to announce the fifth instalment of our Creative Coding Club! \nThis workshop explores ways of interfacing with Figma with alternative interfaces. We will detach ourselves from the keyboard and mouse\, and instead use any conductive objects to interact with prototypes. \nTo accomplish this\, we’ll utilize the “Makey Makey” – a device that allows the user to remap computer buttons\, to any kind of conductive object – an interesting addition to the toolbox of any aspiring designer. \nSee you in AIRLab! \nFacebook event: https://fb.me/e/1hH1zJThz  \nPictures below:

SUMMARY:The cultural use of space and ITU's space program
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that ITU is part of a space program?\nSwing by AIRLab on the 31st of October\, and let Julian Priest from introduce you to a hobby you didn’t know you have. \n \nOuter Space is changing. Falling launch costs and the CubeSat form factor means that access to space technology is opening up to new types of user outside of the traditional scientific\, military and commercial communities. New cultural uses are becoming possible\, and the first art satellites have already been launched\, including early works by Julian Priest. In this talk the history of space and satellite art is presented and forms the context for Priest’s own satellite artwork The Weight of Information (2011-2019).\n \nITU is a key member of the DISCOSAT student satellite project which launched its first satellite in April 2023 and will launch a second in autumn 2024. At ITU we currently focus on a range of scientific and technical topics in machine learning\, system design and satellite communications. We outline some potential future projects and ask what cultural\, design\, game or arts projects could be possible using the DISCOSAT platform?\n \nThis event is hosted by DAK and is only for ITU students and alumni
