The cultural use of space and ITU’s space program

October 31, 2023 @ 16:00 - 18:00

Did you know that ITU is part of a space program?
Swing by AIRLab on the 31st of October, and let Julian Priest from introduce you to a hobby you didn’t know you have. ✨

Outer Space is changing. Falling launch costs and the CubeSat form factor means that access to space technology is opening up to new types of user outside of the traditional scientific, military and commercial communities. New cultural uses are becoming possible, and the first art satellites have already been launched, including early works by Julian Priest. In this talk the history of space and satellite art is presented and forms the context for Priest’s own satellite artwork The Weight of Information (2011-2019).

ITU is a key member of the DISCOSAT student satellite project which launched its first satellite in April 2023 and will launch a second in autumn 2024. At ITU we currently focus on a range of scientific and technical topics in machine learning, system design and satellite communications. We outline some potential future projects and ask what cultural, design, game or arts projects could be possible using the DISCOSAT platform?

This event is hosted by DAK and is only for ITU students and alumni
