BioScape is an experimental platform for exploring how molecular biology and music can be brought into an open, interactive and epistemically meaningful relation.

The project makes DNA, RNA and amino acid sequences available as sound, rhythm, harmony, timbre, duration and visual form. Rather than treating music as a fixed representation of biological data, BioScape investigates how biological sequence and musical structure can act through each other: molecular biology becomes something to listen to, inspect and manipulate, while music is shaped by biological logic.

Developed through Research-through-Design as part of a master’s thesis in Digital Design and Interactive Technologies, BioScape builds on an artistic practice of translating scientific structures into music but shifts the focus from finished artwork to interactive inquiry. The central question is how a designed relation between domains can become a space for sensory, bodily, reflective and speculative forms of knowledge.

For biological actors, BioScape offers a sensory and affective way of orienting towards molecular material. Sequence, category, difference, repetition and transition become perceptible through sound, image and interaction, opening space for curiosity, speculation and reflection without replacing established biological analysis.

For musicians and sound artists, BioScape functions as a generative and performative environment structured by biological logic. Biological sequence becomes a compositional premise: unpredictable but not random, constrained but open to interpretation, and capable of producing musical forms unlikely to emerge from musical intention alone.

As part of AIR Lab’s work with affective interactions and relations, BioScape asks how sonic and aesthetic interaction design can make scientific structures felt, actionable and discussable.
